  • A mobile gold panning machine is one you hitch to a vehicle and take to the ground, instead of bringing the ground to the machine.

  • That one requirement reshapes the whole build: wheels, a towing hook, an engine small enough to start by hand, and a frame light enough to cross a track.

  • The unit on this page is the trailer-mounted GMTS-500x1900 at 5-10 t/h - the smallest towable in the range. Everything about it is chosen for the move rather than for maximum tonnage.

What "Mobile" Actually Means on a Gold Panning Machine

  • Sellers use "mobile" for three different things, and only one of them means what a prospector usually assumes.

  • A skid-mounted unit is mobile in the sense that a crane can lift it onto a truck. A plant on a low-loader is mobile between continents. Neither of those helps you work four claims in one dry season.

  • A towable mobile gold panning machine is different: it has its own axle, its own tyres, and a towing hook, so it moves behind a pickup on the same road you drive. That is the build this page is about.

  • If your ground changes location every few weeks, that distinction is the whole purchase decision. If your ground never moves, a fixed plant does the same job for less money - and we will say so.

The Towable Build: Drum, Gearbox and Towing Hook

The trailer specification is where a mobile gold panning machine either works or does not. Here is the actual build sheet for the GMTS-500x1900.

  • Item
  • Specification
  • Drum diameter
  • 500 mm
  • Drum length
  • 1,900 mm
  • Capacity
  • 5-10 tons/hour
  • Gearbox
  • WPS-100-20
  • Towing hook
  • Included
  • Tyres
  • 165/70R8, four pieces
  • Spray pipe
  • 42 mm, galvanised seamless
  • Grizzly hopper
  • Steel bar 20 mm diameter, 50 mm bar spacing, 0.5 m³ hopper
  • Gold chute
  • 350 × 1,500 mm, angle adjustable 2-8°
  • Engine
  • HONDA gasoline, 5.5 HP, manual pull start, 0.58 L fuel load

Four rubber tyres and a towing hook are the difference between a machine you own and a machine you can use. The 42 mm galvanised spray pipe is specified for site water, not for a clean mains supply.

The 500 × 1900 Drum and What It Recovers

  • A 500 mm drum running 1,900 mm long is a small screening cylinder, and it is small on purpose. Shorter drums travel. The trade is residence time: material spends less time in the drum, so the feed has to be reasonably free-flowing rather than clay-cemented.

  • The drum separates on size. Undersize drops through the mesh and reports to the collecting chute; oversize travels the length of the cylinder and discharges at the tail. The rotation and the tilt keep the load turning so material does not sit in the openings.

  • That is the whole mechanism. Its value is not throughput - it is that it removes the manual panning step from the workflow while still fitting on a trailer.

Engine Choice: Gasoline, Diesel or Electric

  • The GMTS-500x1900 is specified with a HONDA gasoline engine at 5.5 HP, manual pull start and a 0.58 L fuel load. For a machine that has to start at a claim with no services, that specification is deliberate: no battery, no starter motor, nothing that goes flat.

  • Above this size the mobile gold panning machine range moves to diesel engine or electric motor drive, with the gearbox and motor matched to the plant rating and drawn from established suppliers.

  • A generator set or a grid connection becomes the practical choice once the drive power climbs.

  • If your site has no fuel logistics, say so at enquiry stage. The drive specification is one of the few things on a mobile unit that is easier to decide before the build than after.

The Gold Chute and the Grizzly Hopper

  • Two components do the work that customers never ask about until they are on site.

  • The grizzly sits over the feed hopper. On this machine it is 20 mm steel bar at 50 mm spacing over a 0.5 m³ hopper.

  • Its job is to stop anything larger than the drum can handle before it gets in - roots, cobbles, scrap. The 50 mm spacing sets how much of that you reject by hand versus screen mechanically.

  • The gold chute is 350 × 1,500 mm and the angle is adjustable between 2° and 8°.

  • Chute angle is the field adjustment that matters most on fine gold: flatter lets the material move slowly and the gold settle, steeper clears the chute faster.

  • Being able to change it on site, rather than shimming the frame, is the difference between a machine that works on your ground and one that works on the test ground.

Water on a Machine That Moves

  • A mobile gold panning machine carries its water system with it, and that is the constraint that decides where you can stop.

  • This unit sprays through a 42 mm galvanised seamless pipe fed from site water. Because the pipe is specified for site conditions rather than a treated supply, you can run it from a pit, a bowser or a pump without worrying about what is suspended in the water.

  • Water volume is the limiting factor for any panning operation.

  • Where we design the wider plant, the circuit includes a settling pond and a return line so most of the process water is recovered and reused rather than drawn fresh.

  • That is what makes a moving operation viable when the nearest water is a long pump run away.

Setting Up at a New Claim

  • The reason to own a towable unit is the setup, not the towing. A machine that takes three days to install only moves once a season.

  • Everything on this build is arranged for a short commissioning: the axle and towing hook mean it arrives at ride height, the manual-start engine means there is nothing to charge, and the adjustable chute means the slope is set where you park it.

  • The practical sequence at a new claim is to level the trailer, connect the spray supply, set the chute angle against your material, and confirm the drum runs clear before feeding. On a machine this size, that is a task measured in hours rather than shifts.

What Wear Shows Up When a Machine Travels

  • A stationary plant wears from the material it screens. A mobile gold panning machine also wears from the road, and the failure modes are different.

  • Road movement works on the frame, the axle and the drum mountings rather than on the screen. Vibration is the mechanism, so the things to check between moves are the structural welds, the drum mounting bolts and the tyre condition - not the mesh.

  • At the drum, the wear item is still the deck. Because a short drum turns the load more intensely for its length, the inlet end of the mesh takes the most abrasion. The grizzly bars take impact wear from oversize material and are worth inspecting on the same schedule.

  • Running the machine clear before shutdown - no material left in the drum - is what keeps a unit that travels from becoming a unit that jams.

What Buyers Ask Before a Mobile Setup

Q: Is this the same machine as your mobile gold washing trommel?

A: No. The washing trommel is a full circuit on a trailer - feed, scrubbing, screening and gravity concentration - and it starts well above this unit's capacity. A mobile gold panning machine is the smaller, simpler machine for one operator working a claim.

Q: What is the smallest unit you do?

A: The GMTS-500x1900 on this page: a 500 × 1,900 mm drum, four tyres, a towing hook, and 5-10 tons per hour.

Q: Can one person run it?

A: Yes, on the basis it was specified for: manual-pull start, no separate power unit to manage, and mechanical adjustments at the chute and grizzly that one person can make.

Q: Does it need a foundation or concrete pad?

A: No. The trailer carries the machine. That is the point of the build.

Q: How does it handle clay-bound ground?

A: Light clay breaks down under the spray and the tumbling load. Heavy clay-cemented ore is outside this machine's design envelope - that feed needs a scrubber-based plant, and we will tell you before quoting rather than after delivery.

Q: What about shipping and warranty?

A: Standard builds leave the factory in about 15 days, and machines ship in a steel frame under waterproof canvas with a loading diagram for the container. Main machines carry a 12-month warranty, and spare parts are held matched to the model.

Tell Us Where the Machine Has to Go

The useful questions for a mobile gold panning machine are about movement, not tonnage. Tell us how many claims you work in a season, how far apart they are, what access road you have to cross, and whether there is water and fuel at each stop.

Send that and the answer comes back with a model, a drum size, a drive specification and the chute and grizzly set for your ground - sized for the ground you actually work rather than for a brochure figure.
