Large Roller Sand Screening Machine
- The drum does the classifying, not a vibrating deck. Material enters one end of a rotating perforated cylinder, travels its length, and drops through the mesh in the size band you specified. What does not fit exits the far end.
- Every large roller sand screening machine below runs on a towable frame, from a 1,200 mm drum to a 2,000 mm one, rated for sand, gravel and pit-run aggregate.

What the Roller Does on a Sand Screening Machine
- Sand and gravel are sorted by size before they are sold, and the device that does the sorting is a perforated cylinder. Material is fed in at one end, the cylinder turns, and everything smaller than the aperture falls through.
- Everything larger is carried along the inside and out the far end.
- That is the whole principle. On a sand screening machine the rotating screen is not a conveyor with holes in it - it is the classifier, and its diameter and length set how much material you can put through it and how clean the split will be.
- That distinction is why a large roller sand screening machine is specified by cylinder length as much as by diameter. A short drum passes material quickly; a long one gives every particle more than one chance to meet an opening.
- The aperture is the one part of that arrangement you should expect to change over the machine's life, which is why the WTS trommels take interchangeable mesh panels rather than welded screens.
Where the Drum Sits in a Sand and Aggregate Circuit
- In a quarry or pit operation the screening unit normally sits in one of two places.
- The first is ahead of a crusher. Pit-run gravel goes in, the oversize stone comes out one end, and the sand and fines are taken off before the material ever reaches the reduction stage.
- Screening at that point keeps oversize out of the crusher and takes the finished sand out of the circuit early, which is where the throughput gain comes from.
- The second is after crushing, where the same screen splits the output into the grades you actually sell. If your product list is three or four sand and stone grades, the unit on that sand screening machine is doing the work that decides whether those grades meet spec.
- Either way the machine is being asked to do one thing well: hold a size split consistently, shift after shift.
Four WTS Models for Sand and Aggregate Duty
The WTS range runs from an 800 mm cylinder upward. A large roller sand screening machine for quarry duty starts at the 1,200 mm drum, so the four models below are the ones specified here.
| Model | Trommel Ø (mm) | Length (mm) | Capacity (ft³/h) | Transport dims (mm) | Working dims (mm) | Net weight (kg) | Speed (r/min) | Angle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WTS1230 | 1200 | 3000 | 1060-2473 | 5500×2200×2200 | 5550×4800×2530 | 3,210 | 16-22 | 0-4° |
| WTS1560 | 1500 | 6000 | 1413-3887 | 8400×2480×2500 | 8400×5700×2926 | 7,200 | 16-22 | 0-4° |
| WTS2050 | 2000 | 5000 | 2120-6184 | 8900×3200×3400 | 8900×7550×3828 | 13,600 | 12-16 | 0-4° |
| WTS2055 | 2000 | 5500 | 2120-6184 | 9350×3200×3384 | 9350×7525×3828 | 10,560 | 12-16 | 0-4° |
- Three things to read in that table. Cylinder length matters more than diameter for clean separation - the WTS1560 and the WTS2050 differ by 500 mm in diameter but the longer drum is what gives material time to find an opening.
- Capacity on the 2,000 mm models is identical, so the choice between them is cylinder length and weight rather than output. And every model in the range is supplied with a drum cleaning brush, which is the component that stops a sand screen from blinding.
The smaller WTS models, from an 800 mm cylinder, are covered on the topsoil screener page - they suit soil and compost rather than aggregate duty.
Aperture Choice: Woven Wire Against Laser-Cut Plate
- Two screen formats are available on the same cylinder, and on abrasive sand the choice matters more than the size of the opening.
Woven wire mesh gives the largest open area, which is why it passes the most material per square metre. Its weakness is abrasion: on sharp pit-run gravel the wire wears at the crossings and the aperture drifts open over time.
- Laser-cut plate trades some open area for a much longer life against abrasive stone. The openings are cut rather than woven, so they hold their dimension far longer, and the segment is replaced as a panel rather than being re-woven.
- That is why plate is the usual specification on a large roller sand screening machine working quarry feed, and wire is the usual choice where the material is clean sand or where maximum throughput matters more than panel life.
- Both formats mount the same way, so a worn section is swapped as a panel rather than rebuilt on site.
The Anti-Blinding System and the 0.4 MPa Spray
Sand screens blind, and the WTS design addresses it three ways rather than one.
Internal helix lifters tumble the material as it travels, so the load is turned over and re-presented to the mesh instead of sliding across it in one layer. The drum carries a cleaning brush as standard on every model in the range.
And the cylinder is fitted with internal high-pressure water spray nozzles operating at 0.4 MPa, which blast the apertures from both inside and outside. Working together, those three mechanisms are what keep a damp or cohesive feed from packing the openings shut.
The result claimed for the machine is a finished product held below 3% contamination. That figure comes from the screening and washing action together, not from the mesh alone.

Grizzly Setting and Feed Size Ahead of the Drum
- Whatever the screen can pass, the feed has to reach it - and the first restriction is upstream.
- A static grizzly bar set to 200 mm spacing is the usual arrangement ahead of the trommel on quarry feed.
- Boulders over that size are rejected before they enter the cylinder, which protects the mesh from impact damage and keeps the cylinder's work limited to material it can actually classify.
- Matching the grizzly to the machine matters in both directions. Set it too coarse and oversize enters the cylinder, where it does nothing but wear.
- Set it too fine and you are rejecting saleable stone before it has been screened - which on a sand screening machine shows up as lost product tonnage rather than as a mechanical fault.
Mobility: Transport Dimensions Against Working Dimensions
Look at the two dimension columns in the table above and the design intent is visible. A WTS1560 travels at 8,400 mm × 2,480 mm and works at 8,400 mm × 5,700 mm. The drum length is identical; the footprint difference is the discharge conveyor extending on site.
That is what makes the machine relocatable. The unit is built on a towable frame with its own axle, so it moves between pits rather than being dismantled and rebuilt. Transport preparation is limited to the discharge conveyor, and the drum, drive and frame stay assembled.

For a sand screening machine working a pit that moves with the deposit, that is the difference between owning a machine that follows the working face and one that sits where it was installed.
What a Sand Screening Machine Will Not Do
- The limits are worth stating, because a screening machine is regularly specified for jobs it cannot do.
- It does not crush. Oversize leaving the drum is oversize; if you need it reduced, that is a crusher upstream and it is a separate purchase.
- It does not wash clay out of aggregate. There is a spray system, and it keeps the mesh open, but genuine clay-cemented feed needs a scrubbing stage - the drum alone will not break it down.
- It does not classify below the practical floor of its mesh. If your specification calls for a clean split at a very fine aperture, a vibrating screen or an air classifier is the correct machine class.
- And it does not dry material. Water leaving with the product is normal on a machine that sprays at 0.4 MPa, and if your downstream process cannot take it, a dewatering stage needs to be in the plan from the start.
Grading Questions We Answer Before Quoting
Q: How many grades can one drum produce?
A: Two from a single-deck drum: the undersize that falls through the mesh and the oversize that discharges at the end. More grades means either a second drum or a different machine class.
Q: Which model suits a pit producing around 100 m³/h?
A: The WTS1560 at 1,413-3,887 ft³/h is the usual starting point for a sand screening machine at that tonnage, moving to the 2,000 mm drums if the material is abrasive or the grade spec is tight.
Q: Does the spray system need a clean water supply?
A: No. The nozzles are specified for site water, and the circuit is normally built with a settling pond and a return line so most of the process water is recovered rather than drawn fresh.
Q: Will the machine hold a size split as the mesh wears?
A: Wire mesh drifts as it abrades; laser-cut plate holds its dimension far longer. On abrasive quarry feed that is the main argument for specifying plate.
Q: How is it moved between pits?
A: On its own axle. Only the discharge conveyor is removed for transport, and the drum and drive stay assembled.
Q: What about spare parts?
A: Every model carries a drum cleaning brush as standard, and the screen panels come off as individual segments so a worn section is replaced without disturbing the rest.
Start From the Grading You Sell
The useful description of your job is short: what the material is, the largest lump size you will feed, the grades you need to produce, and the tonnage per hour you need to move.
Send that and the reply names a large roller sand screening machine model, a drum diameter, a mesh format and an aperture.
It is sized against your grading list rather than against a brochure figure.
